Developed from Real-World Construction Challenges

Midori-chan was developed over 25 years ago as part of Kawada Construction’s effort to improve the sustainability of its own operations.


In the production of precast concrete, large volumes of wooden formwork are used and typically discarded. Rather than relying on third-party disposal, Kawada engineered a solution to repurpose this material—transforming it into a mulch-based growing medium.


Through continued development, including biological enhancements, this process evolved into a reliable vegetation system capable of supporting plant growth with minimal external inputs.


Today, Midori-chan represents a proven approach to integrating sustainability directly into construction and infrastructure projects.

How it Works

Midori-chan is a layered greening system designed to support vegetation while minimizing water usage and long-term maintenance.


The system integrates an engineered growing medium with water retention and drainage layers, allowing plants to thrive in a controlled, low-input environment.
