This is our revolutionary Japanese greening system developed by Kawada Industries, Inc., designed for low-maintenance green roofs and roadside projects. It uses natural rainwater and recycled waste material to promote maximum vegetation growth, which minimises maintenance and water use.
Comprised of a series of filtration and retention layers, Midori-chan™ sits underneath the soil; capturing and recycling water for the plants above. The ultra-lightweight system transfers moisture from water storage units via the thermal energy balance in the soil. A specially regenerated layer of charcoal filters the rainwater before it is drawn up into the plants’ roots. In Hong Kong, our system is being used in rooftop gardens and playgrounds where it has reduced watering by 99.92% (compared to conventional systems) and improved stormwater capture and reuse.

With a water retention capacity of over 3.5 gallons per square foot, the system improves stormwater capture and reuse, reducing flooding and pollution.
As well as holding nearly six times its weight in water, the charcoal in our system filters stormwater -- storing precious nutrients and removing toxic metals.
In Japan and Hong Kong, Midori-chan™ projects require no irrigation. In India, water savings are around 60% compared to conventional green roof systems.
Improved water retention means less irrigation-related maintenance and healthier plants. Charcoal improves the condition of the root zone and specially selected mulch prevents weeds from germinating.
Through a process known as evapotranspiration, plants cool the air around them. They also absorb urban pollutants like ozone and particulate matter.
As well as cooling the surrounding air, when added to the building envelope, Midori-chan™ forms a natural insulation and reduces the energy demand (and cost) for HVAC.
